An elite Kentucky politician has been found dead with a gunshot wound to the head shortly after accusations surfaced that he had sexually assaulted a minor.
Allegations emerged this week from now-21-year-old Maranda Richmond that 57-year-old Republican Rep. Dan Johnson sexually abused her when she was a child. According to claims, the victim was a friend of Johnson’s daughter and says she awoke to find the powerful lawmaker sexually assaulting her during a sleepover when she was a teenager.
She said she had previously attempted to file a complaint with police against Johnson in 2013, but he used his “connections in high places” to have the case shut down. The father-of-five, who also served as a bishop, made headlines when he posted racist posts on social media likening the Obama’s to monkies and when he claimed he “ran the morgue” during the 9/11 attacks which he described as “heaven and hell,” but it was later proven that he was never at Ground Zero.
Nicknamed “The Pope,” Johnson prided himself on high-level connections such as former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George Bush Snr. Shortly before his death, Johnson posted a statement about the accusations in which he cited “Satan” and said to “blame the Devil himself” for his crimes.
Police have been analyzing the post for clues that it may have been meant as a suicide note after it said that pedophilia was a “sickness that will take my life,” adding that he “cannot handle it any longer.” Since his death, his Facebook page has been made private, but people who knew who left messages on his profile with mixed feelings.
